A digital video library of concepts for Hatching the Nation-State

What is a nation-state?

My new book, Hatching the Nation-State: Sovereignty, Boundaries and Evolution will be released by Nimble Books www.nimblebooks.com on November 16, 2009. The book proposes four ways in which the nation-state must be reconceived in order to survive the pressures of globalization.

The assertion of the book is that the nation-state needs to mature in terms of four of its historical properties – or it will be broken by pressures of international commerce and transnational migration. The four properties that need to evolve are: Sovereignty, boundedness, “unity” (particularly ethnic “unity” of the nation-state), and modernity. All four properties need to become less rigid and absolute, while simultaneously better defined.
